Three walking tracks within the Mōrere Hot Springs complex remain open while the pools are closed, due to potential contamination from the failing septic system. The pools are expected to reopen in spring 2024. The main entrance from the car park on SH2 is also closed. Access to the walking tracks is via nearby Tunanui Road. Parking is on the roadside, do not drive up the dirt track.

The Cemetery Track is a 10-minute, uphill track leading from the cemetery off Tunanui Road. It joins the Nikau Loop Track and Ridge Track, which are also open. Link to Department of Conservation website

The Nikau Loop Track is a 20-minute, all-weather track on easy gradients. It's a short, easy walk suitable for families. But, to get to the Nikau Loop Track while the main Morere entrance is closed, walk from the Cemetery Track over the ridge following part of the Ridge Track.

The Ridge Track circuit is a demanding, two-hour track suitable for fit walkers. It climbs through tall forest to a ridge covered in black beech, lancewood, and mingimingi, with clearings offering views over the forest and farmland hills beyond.

The Mangakawa Track, which follows the Mangakawa Stream with views of waterfalls and small gorges, is currently closed. This is a challenging, 2.5-hour walk for fit walkers and is weather-dependent. Its several stream crossings can have slippery rocks.

History of the trail

Mōrere Springs were a traditional bathing spot for the Ngāti Rākaipaaka hapū. In the 1880s, most of the surrounding native bush was cleared for farming, except for immediately around the springs, which became a thermal reserve in 1895. A bathhouse and hotel were built at this time. The reserve is administered by the Department of Conservation and the hot springs are leased to a private operator.

Tips & Logistics

Walking access is via the alternative Tunanui Road entrance while the SH2 Morere Springs entrance is closed. The Mangakawa Track is currently closed.
